NORTH NATIONAL FOREST PLANTLET EXEMPLARY BASE, BEIJING
Recently, I have visited North National forest Planted Exemplary Base at Changping District of Beijing Xiaotangshan Town south east village, Beijig, China. This nursery was founded in 1965. Dr. Liu Young, a professor who is our course teacher, was guided the field visit. Mr. Li, a senior engineer gave us a short brief about the nursery, he also acquainted with every pros and cons of the nursery. He told us that the nursery was started with the objective of raising seedlings for plantation but later, from economic point of view they also started to raise ornamental species.
The nursery has 2 million square meters greenhouse, 2 million square meters hardened field , 3,000 square meters cold storage, 2500 square meters office building , 2,300 square meters control building , 626 square meters group training workshop, 3,000 square meters comprehensive workshop along with 3 million square kilometer modern self-controlled greenhouse.
The total nursery is divided into four distinct administrative areas, these are germ-plasm collection and conservation nursery; forest seedling production and demonstration area; flower production and demonstration area; recreational area and integrated management area. This is the biggest nursery for production of seeds and seedling for plantation and ornamental species. The production of the nursery is nearly 200 plants species and 100 ornamental species.
I was really surprised with the description of Mr.Li, he saw us some beautiful species which are really unique to me and also I saw them first time in my life. The nursery was full of colorful tree species. In the nursery we saw Arizona, a flowering plants with love shaped leaf and dark red flower and Anthurium with red flower and long dark green leaf. Golden Bough Sophora japonica was seen in the ex-situ plantation and this species is used for grafting culture.
This species is truly attractive to tourists as in spring the leaf of the species become yellow but with the change of season, in summer the lower surface gets green and the upper surface still glows with yellow color. We also observed Henan species and Bungeana species in the ex-situ plantation. The most attractive species was Magnolia, there are plenty of plants with white, yellow and purple flowers.
I would like to say, this is actually tough to depict the full description of North National forest Planted Exemplary Base but I just want to say, this tour not only provided me the real experience of silvilcuture practice but it also enchanted me with its diversified colorful species and most modern silvicultural technique.
As a whole, North National forest Planted Exemplary Base is the heart of Beijing which is the great source of pure oxygen for densely populated and over polluted Beijing.
